Basic Blackjack Strategies for Beginners

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games played online. Combining skill with luck, Blackjack pits players directly against the dealer in a head-to-head battle for each round. One of the reason’s Blackjack is so popular is because it has a low house edge to start with and is one of the few games where you can actually reduce the house edge by playing the right strategy. That being said, Blackjack is an easy game to play and a difficult one to master.

When it comes to strategies, mathematicians have crunched the numbers and have created the perfect Blackjack strategy for every single hand combination. Unlike mobile Craps, which is based largely on chance, strategy can go a long way to help you win big in Blackjack. If you are serious about playing and winning online, the first thing you should do is learn the complete Blackjack strategy and start implementing it straight away. The great thing about playing online is that you can always hone your skills playing in practice mode before swapping over and using your new-found skills in real money mode.

Understanding Blackjack Hands

If you are just starting out and you are looking for a simple way to increase your winnings, there are a few tips you can start putting into practice straight away. The first step is understanding the different types of hands. There are three basic hand categories in Blackjack; namely hard hands, soft hands and pairs. Hard hands are Blackjack hands that do not contain an ace. A soft hand is a hand that contains an ace with any other card from 2-9. A pair is a hand that contains two of the same value cards.

Strategies for Soft Hands

The strategy we are going to look at involves changing your decision based on the type of hand you are dealt. If you are dealt a soft hand (one with an ace), then you have a bit of flexibility to work with. Here you should:

  • Stand with any soft hand of 19 or above
  • Hit if you are dealt a hand of 17 or lower
  • Hit on 18 when the dealer has less than 6
  • Stick on 18 when the dealer has more than 6
  • Double down on hands of 13-18 if the dealer has a 5 or 6

Strategies for Hard Hands

Hard hands are very different from soft hands as you don’t have the luxury of having the ace to compensate for overshooting the mark. Here the rules are a little different. With hard hands, you should:

  • Stand if you have a hard hand of 17 or more
  • Hit if you have a hard hand of 9 or less
  • For any hand of 12-16, you should hit, unless the dealer is showing a 7.
  • Double down if you are dealt a 9 or 10

Strategies for Pairs

In Blackjack, being dealt a pair can be beneficial if you know the right way to use your cards. The following strategies should apply:

  • It is always a safe bet to split a pair of 8’s or aces
  • Never split any pair of 4’s, 5’s or 10’s.
  • You can split any other pair as long as the dealer is showing a 6 or lower.

Using these basic principles, you can reduce the number of hands you lose and over time learn how the concepts come into play. If you are going to play Blackjack with larger bets, make sure you understand the risks or play in practice mode to boost your skills before heading to the casino.

Can Blackjack Really Improve your Poker Game?

Both blackjack and poker can be accurately described as skill-based casino games and while there are many online casino blackjack players that enjoy a game of poker and vice versa out there, there are important distinctions to be made between the two and it is often vital that a player perfects their blackjack game before transitioning to poker.

Blackjack is one of the oldest games on the planet, with it universally accepted amongst experts that the game originated in French casinos in the early 1700s. In comparison, poker and especially the Texas Hold’em variant is still arguably in its infancy, with tournaments in this style only coming into prominence since around 1970.

There are many differences between the two games, the main one being that blackjack requires the player to play against the dealer and the house whereas poker players generally compete against each other. Still, while the strategies involved in the two games couldn’t be more philosophically diverse, there are several aspects of blackjack that translate very well to most variants of poker. In that way, it’s no wonder that a good blackjack player will approach poker with useful skills even if they are new to the game, and vice versa.

Confidence

Confidence is all important in any skill-based card game. Players need to have faith in their own ability to make the right decisions under pressure and equally important is the need to know when things aren’t going in their favor in order to stop and regroup. Playing blackjack, regardless of the variant you go for also helps you understand that losses are unavoidable, owing to the fact that the probable outcomes are more out of your hands in comparison to a game such as Texas Hold’em.

With regards to proof that the confidence and aptitude required for blackjack are transferable to poker, you need to look no further than Doyle Brunson or Russ Hamilton, with the latter displaying a proficiency in both of the card games. Hamilton won the 1994 WSOP, defeating Hugh Vincent and taking home $1m for his troubles as well as winning his own body weight in silver, as it was the 25th anniversary of the tournament. Hamilton is the mastermind behind the concept of Elimination Blackjack, which revolutionized the game and made it more accessible and exciting as a television spectacle. On top of this, the American founded The Ultimate Blackjack Tour in 2005, which was televised after American network CBS bought the rights to the show and became the network’s highest rated show at the time in its particular slot.

Knowledge, Tactics and Math

It follows that players need a good understanding of the rules of both blackjack and poker before taking the plunge but simply being aware of the basics isn’t enough for those wanting to excel in both arenas. However, the skills involved in both poker and blackjack are often more interchangeable than players think, with both games requiring players to mathematically work out the odds of beating the deck.

In blackjack, getting your cards to add up to 21 is obviously the primary objective but players must know what the chances of getting to this number or at least as close as possible and when to use one of many tactics available such as splitting, surrendering or even doubling down. Although there are many variants of blackjack games, the differences between them are usually subtle. Andy Bloch is another player who has made the successful transition from blackjack to poker and has been featured in the 2005 blackjack documentary The Hot Shoe, as well as starring in his own instructional blackjack DVD, Beating Blackjack. As an article by The Telegraph documents, Bloch’s rise throughout the casino world was meteoric and garnered so much worldwide attention that he was immortalized in the Sony Pictures film 21, which went straight to the top of the box office upon its release in 2008, grossing an impressive $157m worldwide.

Psychology

Despite the skill factor involved in both blackjack and poker, you could make the case that psychology has just as big a part to play in determining whether players will be successful or not. Playing any game of skill in the wrong frame of mind can have disastrous effects and every decision is best calculated with both a calm and clear mind. This is especially important as otherwise you experiencing tilt, which can’t only happen in poker but in blackjack and beyond, if you think about it. This emotional state of frustration involves a player playing poorly due to emotional distress, usually caused by a bad run of cards. By widening one’s range of games and experiencing different setups, poker players can shield themselves against tilt. As in blackjack you play against the dealer, your opponent will not try to rile you up or bluff, but the experience itself is valuable in learning to focus on the game and not let emotions get the better of you.

Research carried by Dutch psychologists out into the most common mistakes blackjack players make has concluded that 44% errors relate to not taking an extra card when they should, indicating that players gamble conservatively in an attempt to stay in the game. With a more positive psychological outlook and a winning mentality, these mistakes can be eliminated by getting yourself in the right frame of mind before you sit down at the table or log onto your mobile device. Blackjack is a game which requires a full amount of focus and the psychological foundations built by playing it are sure to be stretched even further in a game of poker. Playing against other players as opposed to the dealer means that not only do you have to master and control your own facial expressions and body language, you also need to train yourself to detect changes in your opponent’s demeanor.

Patience Is Key – It Takes Time!

As is the case with any sport, activity or hobby, getting good requires massive amounts of practice and let’s face it, a certain amount of luck. Thankfully, with the advancement of technology and rising popularity of the online casino industry, there are plenty of games available where players can hone their skills at the casino without a need to bet real money, and this is probably the best way for newcomers to blackjack or even poker to gain the experienced required to sit at the top tables with the pros.

In addition to this, there are various tutorials, in particular on the popular streaming and video website YouTube, where players can learn the basics of the game and then progress through increasing levels of difficulty in order to start thinking about barging open their local casino doors, ordering a Martini (or something equally as fancy) and taking a seat at a table to ready to take on the rest of the casino.

New Age Mobile Gaming

Birds of a feather flock together, like the latest rendition of Angry Birds, flying through the air, busting through cages and revealing a dramatic win card. New age mobile gaming has summoned its powers and given the world something to turn its head full circle, as mobile devices start their slow yet rapid domination in the technological sphere.

It’s touch, swipe, pull and hold. The new tech evident in most of the new smartphones of today compliments a playing style that the new consumer demands. Millennials love their consoles, but there’s something to be said about gaming on the go with smartphones.

The games are simplistic, and reminisce towards the golden age of video games, where little needed to be done to evoke a sense of fulfilment and pride. Smartphone games are the buzz, but the world has moved passed two-dimensional Angry Birds and we demand something a little more intricate and exciting.

The Smartphones Success

The device is sleek, compact, portable and convenient. What more do you want from a device that has nifty apps and games that makes your life simplified with a few simple swipes of the screen?

Loaded with nifty apps that connect to a direct lifeline and interconnected to the world around you, especially the web via Social Media channels and other unique features that keep you up to date with the world around you, and keep you in constant communication; smartphones are so much more than a phone these days.

These devices are a way of life that echo your personal exterior into an inward domain that is turning ever cold and isolating speech and touch in a brave move, which will eventually see the tangible world plugged into the virtual world.

The Development Of Mobile Games

When smartphones first launched, games like Angry Birds were at the forefront of the revolution. It was all about swiping and pulling, but the most captivating feature of all was the touch interface that was able to guide player navigation. Even real money mobile slots took on a whole new dimension.

The world has moved passed the idea of touch screens and now with the technology in common use, mobile game enthusiasts demand more from their high end products loaded with top end specs.

High end mobile devices are loaded with cores and processing power that will defy the likes of your laptop that idly sits by and gathers dust. So, it’s no wonder mobile phone games have been patched and buffed up for a reworked vision, which tells the story of the mobile gaming revolution.

With touch and swipe common features, modern mobile games on smartphones make use of the devices enhanced hardware that allows for a radically different gaming experience. In today’s modern age smartphone gaming is slowly catching up to the console standard.

This has been made possible by crystal clear high-resolution displays and game developers who have accommodated touch interface displays with their latest renditions of popular franchises that excelled on consoles.

The Ongoing Debate Between Console and PC Gamers

October 12, 2017 By editor

The PC vs Console Dilemma

There is an ongoing debate between gamers as to which platform is the best one for gaming, PC or Console?  Each platform has advantages and disadvantages and gamers will more than likely have their favourite option and stick to it.  Just like the Apple-Android debate rages on, so too does each side have a strong opinion and  a very clear preference.

To begin with it is important to make a distinction between how each platform is used.  PC games are played using a personal computer and console games are developed to be played on a console and are generally intense games.  The most popular consoles today are the Xbox from Microsoft, the PlayStation for Sony, the Gamecube and Wii from Nintendo.

Cost and Upgrades

When looking at differences in the cost of these, PC’s are often much more expensive than consoles and the games for PC’s are generally more expensive than console games.

Accessories for a PC often use a standard connection which means that PC users do not have to buy a new mouse, keyboard or headset for example. PC gamers have the option of customising their PC and then upgrading certain parts as technology advances. For PC gamers upgrading is an easy process although it may be expensive and for gamers working within a tight budget they may only have to upgrade their GPU or RAM every 3 or 4 years.

The outlay may be more than a console to begin with, but in the long run it is cheaper to upgrade a PC than to buy a new console when the latest one is released.  With consoles, upgrading is not really an option and only certain areas of a console can be customised. Gamers will not be able to open up their console and replace the GPU for example when new technology comes out.

Games

Games play an important, if not the most important factor when deciding on a platform. Although you won’t find anything like the selection of games available at a CAD casino for any console, the genres and variety are important to players.  Developers have created many games for Xbox or PlayStation and a gamer that has an Xbox One may not be able to play these games.  For PC gamers they get the option to choose many of these games as they are compatible with a PC.  Good news for PC gamers is that Sony offers PlayStation Now which is a streaming service offered on a subscription basis for PC gamers.  Not to be outdone Xbox offers the Xbox Play Anywhere service.

Initial Setup

There is often quite a lot to setup with PC gaming, which can often be fun for those interested in the technology but if a gamer does not really know all the ins and outs it may become frustrating. Setting up a console is usually very easy and a gamer can get going in no time. Some PC’s will not support multiplayer games, while console gaming is great for this and many gamers can play together in one room.

Speed is important when gaming and for beginners using a mouse and keyboard offers more control than a joystick.  The keyboard and joystick are more accurate.  On the other hand it is better to play certain games on an Xbox One controller or the PS DualShock 4 using the wired or Bluetooth option.  Many of the more popular games can also be played on a PC using a controller.

Both platforms have their pros and cons and knowing which platform to choose will also depend on the type of gamer and whether they prefer casual or hard-core gaming.
