The Comeback is on: Classic Games Becoming Much More Accessible

April 22, 2020 By editor

Old man playing checkers outdoors

For most people of pre-00s generations, the gateway into classic board and card games was through family members, such as parents or grandparents. Not only did this allow the younger player to be walked through the processes of the game, but it also gave them someone or some people to play against.

The likes of rummy, dominoes, backgammon, and checkers would all be passed down, but in the modern age, with portable entertainment everywhere, the tradition is waning. However, many people have taken to keeping classic games in the modern conversation, making them even more accessible via digital platforms.

Here, you can learn to play several classic games as well as learn key strategies and discover where to find some helpful reading. Classic gaming continues to evolve into the digital space, with online guides as well as ways to learn and play the games with the necessary opponents through popular platforms.

Making the world’s classic games accessible and competitive

While there are many online browser adaptations available of classic games, the leading gaming consoles don’t have much of a classic game offering. This might be because developers don’t think that there’s an audience for the games. However, one upcoming game feels that it has cracked it and is ready to make a splash with a plethora of the world’s classic games.

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics is coming to the incredibly popular and accessible – due to its hybrid hardware – Nintendo Switch. As the title details, the game features 51 classic games from around the world. These include: mancala, backgammon, checkers, speed, blackjack, chess, Texas hold’em, war, pig’s tail, and mahjong solitaire among many others.

By compiling 51 classic games, the Switch title becomes much more appealing to potential players. Furthermore, some of the games will be playable online against other players, which means that even if you’re on your own, you can still get the authentic experience of competing against others. It’s an important aspect as playing against the computer can get tedious, and it doesn’t replicate how real people play.

Of course, having all of these games available in one neat package on a popular console will help to bring more people into classic games. Those who get Clubhouse Games for perhaps one or two titles – even if it’s the toy boxing or air hockey – will be more inclined to try and learn others.

Bringing the real-feel experience to devices

Most classic games invoke an element of player-versus-player competition, or an aspect of a player taking on someone who controls or runs the other side of the game. As such, without other people or a proper establishment around, many don’t get the chance to try some classic games, let alone practice them to gain experience.

Now, with the availability of online platform gaming, people in regions around the world have been able to learn and play some of the most long-lasting classics. Particularly in South Africa, you can play games like roulette, craps, and baccarat on trusted gambling sites as the platform gives the necessary support of a dealer and operator to perform the stages and sort any winnings. Of course, this can come from going to a land-based casino, but for many, these are either too far away or can be daunting if the potential player isn’t familiar with the games.

Being digital games, there’s the added benefit of the online classics providing one-click access to on-screen rules and strategies within the games as well as them being played at the player’s pace. Once the game has been learned and mastered, players using specific platforms can also then try out the live variants. These live casino games are streamed to devices and feature human dealers, giving the game authenticity.

Classic games are being kept alive and are even making a comeback in some areas thanks to people bringing them to digital platforms. With increased accessibility and more information available, even those who are no-longer learning through traditional means can still access and enjoy classic games.

How to Feel at Home When Playing in an Online Casino

April 20, 2020 By editor

vegas slot machines
Playing slots is an excellent choice for beginners as the rules are easy to pick up

Even those who enjoy heading to the casino for an evening of fun can feel a little lost when it comes to playing their favorite games online. If you consider yourself something of a poker professional, then it’s still possible that the move from real life to online can be a little confusing. Of course, it’s not always possible to make it to your neighborhood casino, so getting acquainted with online play can be a good idea.

Here are some tips to ensure that you feel just as confident logging into a casino website as you do when walking through the doors of a brick and mortar one.

How do Online Slots Work?

Slot machines are a good option for beginners, as they’re simple to use. Although there are plenty of flashing lights and different buttons, once you play a few rounds, you’ll find your groove and feel more confident. It’s hard to say how to win at slots every time, although there are a few tips you can use to better your chances.

A good rule of thumb to bear in mind if you’re a beginner is to look for online slots with good RTP percentages. RTP stands for return to player, so a game with a 96% RTP is going to give more money back per play than a game with 87%. Of course, it’s worth remembering that the RTP is an average across all players, so some will win money overall, and others will lose.

Slot machines should never be seen as a failsafe way to make money, but rather a fun way of spending some time. Choosing a machine with a high RTP means that you’re likely to get more spins on the slot machine for your money, which can only be a good thing if getting comfortable with an online slot machine is your ultimate goal.

What About Online Poker?

When online poker first came onto the scene, it certainly divided players. Some immediately moved online, and others vowed never to play on anything but a good solid card table. The play style was wildly different, and it really did polarize people.

Nowadays though, online poker has become infinitely more sophisticated than it used to be and as such, most top poker players will play both online and off. If you understand the basics of poker, then you’ll be just fine playing online, but there are still some differences that are worth noting.

The first is the speed of play. A live game will take much longer than an online one. Generally, in a live tournament, you’ll be dealt around 30 hands per hour, whereas online, you’ll see 60 hands at least. This is in part because the online play does run more quickly, but also because you’re able to sit on multiple tables at once, which is obviously not possible in a traditional setup!

If you’ve only ever played poker in person before, then be prepared for more dynamic gameplay. You’ll quickly realize that everything running that bit faster just serves to amplify your winning and losing streaks. Stick with it, and you’ll be playing with confidence in no time.

And Does Roulette Differ Much?

Roulette Wheel
Although there’s something a little more romantic about casino floor roulette, the better payouts can be found online

Roulette is another table game that is very popular with those who are new to casino. The rules are incredibly simple, and it’s exciting to watch the wheel spin. This game has perhaps the smoothest transition from real life to online in that the rules are exactly the same, and the only changes are positive ones.

In a brick and mortar casino, the running costs are considerably higher than an online site; there are staff to pay, a building to rent, and bills to account for. Therefore, online sites can offer better payouts at the roulette wheel, as they have fewer costs to cover. If you’re looking to get maximum bang for your buck, then online is the place to play roulette.

One big change from real-life roulette to online is in the variance of the available games. Even at the biggest casinos, it’s very unusual to find more than three varieties of roulette to play, usually American, European Roulette, and House are the variations you’ll find. However, online you can find up to thirteen different varieties, which is a great way to keep things fresh and exciting.

Scrabble Strategy

March 23, 2020 By editor

Scrabble tiles
Scrabble is the world’s most popular word game

Scrabble is the most famous and popular word game in the world. It is estimated that 150 million Scrabble sets have been sold and that a third of American homes and half of British homes have a set in the cupboard. Add in all the smart phone variations, such as Word Feud and Words with Friends, and you have millions of people playing every day.

Like most sports and games, Scrabble is a combination of skill and luck, with the random draw of the letters making all the difference to your turn. This means that while skill will always play a big part, anyone can win an individual game, just like the plucky underdogs who make it so hard for the Oddschecker sports betting experts and their carefully researched predictions. Fortunately, you don’t have to digest the entire dictionary to improve your Scrabble scores. There are a few simple tricks that you can learn that will dramatically change your game.

Learn the two letter words

You might not think two letter words are worth bothering with, but they can be incredibly useful when it comes to placing words parallel with others. There are around 124 two letter words allowed in Scrabble, including obscure ones like AE, EA, IO and OI. You will already know about a third of these, such as TO, AN and IN, so there are only about 80 to learn and it is well worth taking the time to do so.

Learn the high scoring twos

As you work your way through the two letter words, you will find some that are very useful for playing high scoring words. QI, ZO and ZA are all allowed in Scrabble, allowing you to play a longer, high scoring word parallel to an A, I or O. You will inevitably get complaints from your fellow players so it’s worth learning the meanings too. Qi is a lifeforce, Zo is a Himalayan cow and Za is accepted slang for pizza.

Don’t cling on to the big letters

If you can’t play a Z or a Q for lots of points within a couple of goes, play it anyway and move on. Holding on to letters like these just means you are playing with fewer tiles and the points you pass over while you wait for the glory play can quickly outscore what you eventually get for using your big letter. There will always be another game where it will work out for you.

Scrabble 7 letter word
Always look out for seven letter words

Search for sevens

You should always be on the lookout for a word that uses all seven of your letters. Not only will this score quite highly, you will also get fifty bonus points. You can help to create these by building combinations such as IER, IES, IEST and ING. But again, do not hold on to these combinations for too long if it is affecting your game and reducing your scores. Two or three low scores can easily cost you those fifty points.

Double your bonuses

Bonus squares should always be your target in Scrabble, doubling or tripling your letter or even the whole word. But don’t stop there. If you can use the bonus two ways, it can be a big points scorer. For example, a four point H on a triple letter used both ways is 24 points on its own, before you even add the rest of the word, and if you can use this trick with a Q, Z, X or J you are on for a game changing score.

Keep learning

At the end of the day, the best thing you can do to improve your Scrabble is to keep playing and learning. If someone plays a word that is new to you, don’t complain, simply file it away to use yourself next time. Playing Scrabble is the best way to learn Scrabble, especially if you choose opponents who are better than you, so play as often as you can and consider joining one of the 4000 local Scrabble clubs around the world.
