Infographic: The History of Table Games

January 29, 2018 By editor

Some of the most popular casino table games available today have been around far longer than you may realise. Blackjack, craps, poker, roulette and baccarat are all games you would expect to see online at Casinopedia.org and real casinos. All of them have been developed over the years by numerous players to provide the high-quality games we all know and enjoy today.

Take blackjack for instance, blackjack was first recorded in history through the works of Miguel de Cervantes, published around 1601, with a reference to the game of “veintiuna” or ‘twenty-one’. It is presumed the card game was played around this time in Seville, where the writer lived and where the story is set. Over time, the game of twenty-one spread across Europe, before traveling to the saloons of North America in the late 19th century.

The rules of the game described by de Cervantes are very much the same as modern blackjack. Players aimed to make 21 with two or more cards, without going above this total. Just like today’s game, aces could total one or eleven as required. Unlike casino blackjack, twenty-one was often played with a shortened deck with no sevens or eights

Blackjack isn’t the only game though, did you know Roulette’s nickname is the devil’s wheel? Take a look at how the most popular table games have changed over the years below.
